Baby Sofia Milestones, Entry No. 11: Fifi Reading Chinese, Part II

About two weeks into her first foray into learning to read Chinese, Fifi is up to about 50 phrases now!

The new phrases are:

Positions:
  • 上面: Up
  • 下: Down
  • 左: Left
  • 右: Right
  • 中间: Middle
  • 前: Front
  • 后面: Rear
Body parts:
  • 眼睛: Eyes
  • 耳朵: Ears
  • 嘴: Mouth
  • 头: Head
  • 头发: Hair
  • 手: Hand
  • 手指: Fingers
  •  脚趾: Toes
  • 脚: Foot
  • 牙齿: Teeth
  • 舌头: Tongue
  • 腿: Leg
  • 肚: Tummy

Also included are some basics:
  • 大: Big
  • 小: Small
  • 你好: Hello

We're very fortunate that Fifi clearly enjoys learning. It took some time for her to understand what she was doing, but once she figured it out, she really started to love it to the point where she asks to study the first thing in the morning and will sit and study for hours at a time! Hopefully, we can continue to cultivate her appetite for learning!

The Missing iPod Saga

So, a few weeks back, I started charging my iPod at my computer. Usually, I charge my iPod using the soundbar installed above my TV, so it's nice and out of range of Fifi's exploring hands. However, recently, the iPod dock on the soundbar has been acting squirrely, so I'm somewhat forced to charge using an actual computer, the location of which does not provide the same level of natural defense against toddler klepto.

Lo and behold, before long, my iPod was nowhere to be found. I looked everywhere, scrounging all available drawers, in between sofa cushions, under the bed, in the entertainment center, in Fifi's toyboxes and tricycle bins, and even in the trash. I asked Fifi where she put it, and she kept on saying it was in a purse. I searched all of the purses in the house, but to no avail!

Eventually, I resigned myself to accept that it was probably gone for good. But the spooky part is, I would hear it chirping notifications every so often - the chime of a new incoming e-mail alert, a low-battery beep, etc. I wasn't sure if it was just my imagination or possibly Cherry's iPod - though I was pretty sure it was my iPod making those sounds, since Cherry's iPod is a first generation device that doesn't have the external speaker. Or maybe it was my iPod's ghost, haunting me for not taking care of it?

Fast forward a few weeks and Fifi is trying to watch videos on Mommy's first generation iPod but clearly disappointed that there was no sound. Mommy explains to Fifi that her iPod can't play the sound - only Daddy's could, but it's lost now. She seemed to understand, and we went off and continued our normal activities. A few minutes later, Fifi brings an iPod to Cherry. After a few seconds, Cherry exclaims, "Eh? Isn't this Daddy's iPod? Why is it so dusty?" I went over to examine the discovery, and sure enough, it was my missing iPod! I asked Fifi where she found it, and she said "Nuh! (sort of a Chinese sound indicating "there!") and pointed at the kitchen. I inquired further, and she took me over to the oven and pointed underneath the slide out drawer under the oven - clearly a place that would have a lot of dust collected over the years...

Of course she would finally remember where she left it when she wanted to use it!

Fifi reading Chinese!

I've posted a lot of "Fifi Learns" videos lately, but here's another one that really impressed Daddy. Last Friday, Mommy spent a few hours in the morning teaching Fifi to recognize twelve written Chinese phrases. The video below shows Fifi scanning the whiteboard and finding characters that Mommy asks for, and she does a fine job!

The characters are all family members:

  • 爸爸 - ba4 ba: Daddy
  • 妈妈 - ma1 ma: Mommy
  • 哥哥 - ge1 ge: Older brother
  • 弟弟 - di4 di: Younger brother
  • 姐姐 - jie3 jie: Older sister
  • 妹妹 - mei4 mei: Younger sister
  • 爷爷 - Ye3 ye: Paternal grandpa
  • 奶奶 - Nai3 nai: Paternal grandma
  • 外公 - Wai4 gong1: Maternal grandpa
  • 外婆 - Wai4 po2: Maternal grandma
  • 姑姑 - Gu1 gu: Paternal aunt
  • 叔叔 - Shu1 shu: Paternal younger uncle
Not bad for 27 months! I'm pretty sure I didn't know all those characters until I was about ten years old!

Another Video from a Proud Daddy

So, a few days back, I posted video of Fifi reciting numbers in both English and Chinese. Now, Fifi is mastering the first practical application of numbers - counting objects! In the video below, she counts dwarves, and later on, lions, illustrated in her favorite Disney book!

As an aside, yes, Fifi is wearing an eyepatch. She was recently diagnosed with intermittent exotropia, and one of the holistic treatments for this condition is patching the "good" eye to force the patient to train the muscles controlling the "lazy" eye. Unfortunately, the success rate of this treatment is quite low according to the doctors we have seen thus far (including the horrible Dr. Teather, who tried to charge us full price for an office visit where we waited for three hours for Fifi's eyes to dilate, only to be told that our daughter's eyes were not dilated (despite the office technician telling us that she was fully dilated) and sent home with a prescription for a very strong solution that is not recommended for children (the stuff made Fifi squint for two weeks straight) and a return visit scheduled a month later...). However, it is sometimes effective on younger children, and the doctors said there was no harm in trying. The first day worked out pretty well - she did not seem to diverge at all when she had the patch on. It's a long shot, but I'm hoping that it will work out so she doesn't have to get surgery later on...
